Reading the Quran

Narrated Aisha (RA): The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Such a person as recites the Qur’an and masters it by heart, will be with the noble righteous scribes (in Heaven). And such a person exerts himself to learn the Qur’an by heart, and recites it with great difficulty, will have a double reward.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 65, Hadith 4937)

When was the last time you picked a copy of the Quran? Better still, when was the last time you opened Quran on your phone? If you are like the multitudes of Muslims busy with life and work, you may not even remember when the last access Quran.

Imagine you are offering Salah or doing something very important. All of a sudden, you get a buzz on your phone signifying an incoming message. How anxious would you be to finish what you are doing to see the content of the message? You will undoubtedly want to hurry whatever you are doing to see your ‘new’ message.

Do we treat the messages from our creator with the utmost respect they deserve? Are we constantly anxious to look up the next verse, then the next verse just like we eagerly approach our telephone messages? If not, what has happened to us?

In many homes, the Quran is nothing but an item for decoration. It is placed at visible locations on table tops or book shelves so visitors can see that we have copies of the Quran. We download the Quran app but we tap all other icons on our phones except that one. Yet we wonder why we are lost in the world.

The Quran is the compass of mankind. Life on earth is a journey and the Quran is the guide through this journey. It tells us what roads to take, what food to bring alone, how to avoid danger and how to stay safe throughout our journey so that we will reach our destination as winners not as losers.

Despite all its importance, how much Quran have you memorized by heart Akhi? Considering the sixty Hizbs (divisions) of the Quran, how many Hizbs have you committed to memory? O Muslim! When was the last time you tried to commit one Surah to memory? Do we really say we seek Jannah yet we ignore the Word of Allaah?

Allaah will reward those who read the Quran with a lot of blessings. Don’t say that you can’t read perfectly so you won’t try. The above Hadith of Rasululah Salalahu Alaihi Wasalam teaches us that there is reward for the one who can read the Quran fluently but the one who struggles to read the word of God and perseveres all the same get even a greater reward for trying.

In this digital age where the internet is awash with ‘teach yourself everything,’ there are lots of aids that you can use to teach yourself how to read the Quran. It will not happen in one day or in a short period, but with hard work and determination, you’ll eventually get to master how to read the words of Allaah, thereby earning yourself abundant reward.

Get the Quran on your side before the eventful day of Akhirah, the day we will stand in front of Allaah, the creator of the heavens and the earth and everything in between.
